2010 ~ Overnights ~
Third Weekend Overnights: July, August, & September Saratoga to Whitehall (Hudson River to Lake Champlain)
Embark: Saratoga, Saturday morning Return: Saratoga, Sunday afternoon/evening
The Champlain Canal takes us north to the very bottom of Lake Champlain in Whitehall, the birthplace of the American Navy. Our trip takes us through the most rural, remote, and picturesque country running along the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains. Its scenery is unparalleled. Sail with us through six locks and under 19 country bridges, some with only inches to spare for our sternwheeler. Enjoy the canalside as our vessel passes within a few yards of rock walls where the canal was cut through the hills and outcroppings. The canal rises to its highest elevation at one point, 140 feet above sea level, then lowers to match Lake Champlain. In Whitehall, enjoy the museum, its many antique shops, and a visit to the Skene Manor Castle. Later, join us for dinner at one of the fine local restaurants followed by a stage production at the Bridge Theater. After the theater, you may return by bus to our home port or spend the evening in Whitehall at a comfortable country inn.
The next morning, join us for breakfast as we get underway. Catch some of the wildlife and scenery you may have missed on the way north. You may get the opportunity to wave “hello” to Amtrak’s MONTREALER as it passes the vessel just a few feet away where its track run close to the canal for several miles in the middle of nowhere. Whatever you do, don’t forget your camera!
